All About The Jersey Shore Area

Location and Region:

Geographically, the term encompasses the New Jersey coast from Sandy Hook in the north to Cape May in the south.  The Jersey Shore area includes Monmouth, Atlantic, Cape May and Ocean counties.  It is about an hours ride south of New York City following the Garden State Parkway and is 45 minutes from Liberty International Airport in Newark.  Its popularity as a tourist destination is due in large part to the nearly continuous stretch of beaches along its length, classic themes (antique, quaint, and classic), and boardwalks filled with hundreds of rides.

The Jersey shore represents one of the most booming real estate markets on the East Coast as its prominence as a tourist destination and vacation spot has risen greatly in the past decade.  The Jersey Shore is home to many world-famous boardwalks in towns including Asbury Park, Belmar, Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights, Atlantic City, Ocean City, Wildwood, and Cape May.

Culture & History:

Jersey Shore locals are known for their mild-mannered yet staunch disdain for rowdy tourists (shoobie or benny in the local vernacular), usually from the New York and Philadelphia Metropolitan Areas.

For some time, the Jersey Shore has also been known as a live music mecca, due to the numerous rock and roll bars. Most famously in Asbury Park, where Bruce Springsteen honed his skills at The Stone Pony and other local clubs and still makes periodic live appearances either as a solo act, with the E Street Band, or with other artists. Furthermore, Bill Haley and the Comets performed "Rock Around the Clock" for the first time live at the Hoff Brau in Wildwood.

Filipino-American Communities in the Jersey Shore:

The Jersey Shore area is home to a sizable Filipino-American Community.  The main centers where you will find concentrations of Fil-Ams (Pinoys) are in the Toms River Area (in Ocean County) , the Eatontown-Neptune area (of Monmouth County) and in the Atlantic City area (Atlantic County).  There is a strong sense of unity bound by a shared heritage and culture that has kept these communities vibrant and dynamic.  Numerous Fil-Am organizations (whether civic, professional, religious or philantrophic) can be found in almost any town in the Jersey Shore, but the largest civic groups to mention include: The Filipino-American Association of Monmouth County (FAMC) and the Filipino-American Association of Ocean County.

Jersey Shore Athletic Group (JSAG) has been an integral partner to all these Fil-Am groups.  Our organizational emphasis is focused on developing and fostering growth in the sports arena, particularly in the game of basketball.  We have year-round basketball activities serving children to adults, both boys and girls of all ages.  The activities we sponsor include our Bi-Annual Basketball Leagues, the Children's Spring Basketball Clinic, the Caden Dudt Memorial Tournament for kids under 13; we also represent the Jersey Shore / South Jersey franchise in the annual NABA tournament.
